[Note: updated August 2025 to reflect changes in testing process]

In 2024, the Project Management Institute (PMI) quietly took a major step into the future by acquiring an AI training company called Cognilytica (pronounced kog-nih-LIT-ih-kuh). With it came CPMAI—the Cognitive Project Management for AI certification—now making its way into the PMI ecosystem.

So, what is CPMAI? And is it worth your time?

What CPMAI Is (and Isn’t)

CPMAI is a certification specifically designed to help professionals lead AI and machine learning projects—from aligning initiatives with business goals to managing models, teams, and data pipelines. It combines:

• Agile project management practices
• Core AI and ML (Machine Learning) concepts
• Awareness of emerging technologies like Generative AI and AI Agents

The curriculum spans both the strategic (e.g., how to tie AI efforts to business outcomes) and the tactical (e.g., how to define model success, assess data quality, and ensure ethical implementation).

Unlike many AI courses that focus on model building or coding, CPMAI is role-focused. It’s designed for:
• Project and program managers
• Product owners and Scrum masters
• Data professionals
• Executive stakeholders
No prior AI or project management certification is required.

How CPMAI Is Different from Other PMI Certifications

As of August 2025, the CPMAI exam is no longer administered through Cognilytica’s interface.
• You will be scheduling with Pearson VUE as you would for other PMI certifications.
• Currently, training is only available through PMI online. However, we anticipate that will change eventually.
• Informal CPMAI study groups are beginning to form, including our own group here at Gantt Academy.
• There’s no renewal cycle or PDUs required—the certification currently does not expire.

Additionally, the CPMAI is aimed at the entire Agile project team; not just the Project Manager. That makes CPMAI more similar in structure to the ACP and other Agile certifications than the PMP.

Official details are available through the CPMAI Exam Content Outline available through PMI.

Optional Add-Ons

There are two optional modules you can complete in addition to the core CPMAI content:
1 Advanced Technical Topics: for those wanting deeper dives into AI architecture or ML ops.
2 AI Ethics and Responsible Use: ideal for leaders focused on compliance, bias mitigation, and governance.

Time Commitment and Where to Enroll

The core CPMAI curriculum takes approximately 30 hours to complete. Additional study time will depend on your familiarity with the AI and project management concepts covered. All materials and exams are self-paced and available through PMI’s official training portal.
Gantt Academy does not currently offer CPMAI training, though we do offer several AI for Project Managers workshops and leadership courses.

Final Thoughts

If your organization is moving into AI (and most are) CPMAI is a practical way to build the vocabulary, structure, and cross-functional insight required to lead those efforts with credibility.
