CPMAI: The AI Certification You Didn't Know You Needed

[Note: updated July 2026. PMI relaunched this certification in September 2025 with a new name, a required prep course, and a renewal cycle. This article reflects the current program.]

In September 2024, the Project Management Institute (PMI®) quietly took a major step into the future by acquiring an AI training company called Cognilytica (pronounced kog-nih-LIT-ih-kuh). With it came the CPMAI methodology, Cognitive Project Management in AI. In September 2025, PMI relaunched the credential built on that methodology as the PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI (PMI-CPMAI)™.

So, what is PMI-CPMAI? And is it worth your time?

What PMI-CPMAI Is (and Isn’t)

PMI-CPMAI is a certification designed for people who lead AI and machine learning projects, from aligning initiatives with business goals to managing data, models, and cross-functional teams. It is built on the six-phase CPMAI methodology and covers:

Matching AI efforts to real business needs
Identifying and preparing the data an AI project depends on
Iterative development, testing, and evaluation of AI models
Operationalizing AI responsibly, with governance and ethics built in

Unlike many AI courses that focus on model building or coding, PMI-CPMAI is tool-agnostic and role-focused. It is designed for:

Project and program managers
Product owners and Scrum masters
Data professionals and technologists
Consultants and executive stakeholders

No prior AI experience or project management certification is required. You must be at least 18 years old.

How PMI-CPMAI Is Different from Other PMI Certifications

The prep course is mandatory. You must complete PMI’s 21-hour, self-paced PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course before you can schedule the exam. There is no experience-hours application like the PMP®.
The exam is scheduled through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online with a remote proctor, just like other PMI certifications. It is 120 questions in 160 minutes, and you may attempt it up to three times within one year.
It now has a renewal cycle. PMI-CPMAI holders must earn 30 PDUs every three years to keep the credential, the same cadence as the PMI-ACP®. The prep course itself earns 21 PDUs toward your other PMI certifications.
It is aimed at the whole delivery team, not just the project manager. In structure it is closer to the PMI-ACP and other agile certifications than to the PMP.

What Changed in the 2025 Relaunch

If you researched CPMAI before September 2025, most of what you read is out of date:

The credential was renamed from CPMAI to PMI-CPMAI.
The exam moved from Cognilytica’s platform to Pearson VUE.
The old optional add-on modules are gone. The prep course is now a single seven-module program.
The certification is no longer permanent. It requires 30 PDUs every three years.
The exam is available in English now and in nine additional languages as of January 2026.

Time Commitment and Where to Enroll

Plan on the 21-hour prep course plus additional study time, depending on your familiarity with AI and project management concepts. The course and exam bundle is purchased through your myPMI account, with member and non-member pricing.
